Recycling automotive windshields is a precise process involving physical and mechanical separation. What makes it unique is that windshields are not ordinary single-pane glass but laminated glass—consisting of two layers of glass with a PVB plastic interlayer sandwiched between them..
SUNYGROUP’s high-efficiency automotive windshield recycling process involves the following key steps:
1. Pre-treatment and Dismantling
First, rubber seals, wiper attachments, metal clips, and any attached sensors or electronic components are removed from the windshield edges, either manually or mechanically.
2. Separation of Glass and PVB Interlayer
The cleaned laminated glass is fed into a specialized laminated glass crusher. This equipment uses precise pressure and shear forces to crush the outer rigid glass layers into small particles while preserving the integrity of the central PVB interlayer, effectively loosening the bond between the glass and the film.
3. Stripping and Screening
Roller friction is used to thoroughly “rub off” tiny glass fragments adhering to the interlayer. Subsequently, a vibrating screen separates the larger PVB film pieces from the fine glass particles.
The crushed glass is melted down to manufacture new automotive glass, flat glass, glass wool insulation, or high-end architectural decorative glass. The PVB interlayer is washed and pelletized for use in soundproofing floor mats, carpet backings, and automotive impact strips, or purified for the production of new laminated glass interlayers.
