Retired lithium batteries—particularly ternary (NCM/NCA) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries—are rich in high-value metals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, copper, and aluminum. Compared to primary ore mining, recovering metals from spent batteries offers inherent advantages in terms of cost and material grade:

Economic Premium of Lithium Resources: Primary lithium mining involves long lead times and is highly susceptible to geopolitical volatility. In contrast, spent ternary batteries contain 2%–3% lithium—far higher than natural spodumene ore (typically under 1.5%). Through advanced hydrometallurgical processing, recovery rates for lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide can exceed 90%–95%.

Strategic Value Retention of Cobalt and Nickel: As core cathode materials for ternary batteries, cobalt and nickel are expensive and subject to high import dependency. Recycling one ton of retired ternary batteries effectively eliminates the costs associated with smelting and importing several tons of primary ore.

Secondary Refining of High-Value Products: Although LFP batteries do not contain expensive cobalt or nickel, the high-purity lithium carbonate and iron-phosphate precursors extracted through “cascaded utilization combined with hydrometallurgical lithium extraction” can still generate substantial gross profits for recycling enterprises.
